On November 21st, Arraymusic will give the Canadian premiere of the miniature Kalimba Canon (1999) as part of the concert Construction, co-curated by composers-in-residence Monica Pearce and Bekah Simms. US performances of this piece kicked off a quiet, midlife surfacing as a composer in 2020. The composition channels several interests: West African music, spiritual jazz, minimalism especially Steve Reich, and toy instruments. The score is for two kalimbas, played by David Schotzko and Jamie Drake. The concert will include premieres by Pearce and Simms, Toccata by Rashaan Allwood, Apollo’s Touch by Rodney Sharman, and Third Construction by John Cage.
Here’s vale (2001), another kalimba piece from the same period. Its score is for four kalimbas. Both Kalimba Canon and vale are available for purchase in pdf form (email: bruce@elmahboob.com)
